The thing about any of the newer solid state rigs is preservation of your
radio. That means...don't burn it up. Don't run things to almost a max
before you decide..gee..I should have used something else.
It is in reality, imperative to use an external relay. Look at Harbach for
example. They have them for some of the older amps. However, if you have
the where-with-all to home brew your own, by all means do so. Look in the
ARRL handbook (pick one) for ideas.
Keeping stray external voltages from an amp out of your new multi-dollar
radio should be first and foremost on anyone's mind. Ok, the internal relay
may "almost" handle it. Ok, now lightning hits the rig....and the first
thing it sees is the amp. At least with an external relay, isolation is the
best thing to have.
So, whether it is Icom, Kenwood or Brand "Y", please use a little thought
about "what if" and use the external relay. Nothing beats isolation between
your transceiver and the amp.no matter whose amp it is.
