Duane,

I purchased my IC-775DSP (serial number 1304) brand new from AES back in
the mid 90's. Other than an initial problem with an internal antenna
connector not hooked up, it has been a great rig. About two years ago I
had it sent back for battery replacement (it wasn't dead yet, but I was
pre-empting it!), tuning shaft tightening, and a general "tune up". Have
had a lot of rigs (mostly Kenwoods) and I must say this rig has been the
best. It isn't small, but for someone with aging eyes and klutzy
fingers, it's excellent!

Sounds like your friend got a dud. The service people in WA are pretty
good, maybe he hasn't complained loud e'nuff...
