As my warranty period ran near end I decided to send my Pro back to have the
encoder replaced. You know the symptoms, wobbly shaft . I tightened it up
myself but that did not fix the fact that the encoder itself is substandard.
I just got it back from Icom yesterday and it is like it should have been
from the start. It has a nice solid feel and works smoothly. Just like auto
companys and other big businesses they depend on suppliers to provide parts
and these were just a bad batch. It is a shame this was not caught on the
line but these things happen over there as well as here so we just have to
make the best of it and hope we are dealing with a company that stands
behind their product. I also asked them to look into the display being slow
to light up and they replaced a light for the display. It seems to work fine
now as before I sent it in it would be slow to light up if I had it off for
a couple of days. It lit up right off the bat when I took it out of the box
after its journey with UPS so I guess that was the problem with that and not
the dreaded display transistor problem as with the non- pros . They also
touched up my TCXO I had installed and checked most of the functions of the
radio for me. I am very pleased with my service experience and would suggest
all 746 Pro owners to examine the encoders while you have warranty left and
consider some down tiime for an upgrade as in my opinion it is well worth
the trouble. My 2 cents and then some, Rick, K8DXN.
