The metal insert you are talking about sounds like the Rivnut or
"Rivet Nut" that is used to replace stripped out threads in thin
metal. We used to use them on aircraft when I was a Coast Guard
Aviation Structural Mechanic.
I think "Rivnut" was a brand name (kind of like "Kleenex") and the
manufacturer was either B F Goodrich or Goodyear.
I bought some rivet nuts from Aircraft Tool Supply a couple of years
ago. It is possible they would have what you need, or if you know an
A&P at the airport, you might be able to bum a couple of inserts and
an installation tool.
