Hi Kim,
I can't comment on your idea about using hamsticks with the AH-4 but it
seems to make sense, the longer the effective wire you have the happier
the tuner will be, especially at lower frequencies.
My real question to you is concerning the installation of the tuner and
whip. I have an AH-2 that I use with my IC706 MkII. I would like to use
it mobile but just can't figure the best way to mount it. I have a 98
model Jeep Cherokee and I was thinking of fixing the tuner to an
aluminium plate, along with the whip, and bolting the whole lot to the
roof bars.
I would be very interested to see what you have done to mount the tuner
and whip. If you have any pictures that could be emailed or seen on a
web site that would be great.

Subject: [Icom] AH-4 & Hamstick
Hello,
I just put an AH-4 into service tuning a 102" whip from Radio Shack. It
is all mounted in the center of my Passat Wagon on a four magnet mount
and grounded with braid to a roof rack bolt.
I have read that using a 20 meter Hamstick in place of the simple whip
will add enough "center-loaded" inductance to allow better matching 80-6
and better performance.
Has anyone found that to be true? Would there be a difference using a 40
meter Hamstick? A 80 meter Hamstick?
The current configuration (simple whip) seems to load and match with a
swr of less than 1.5:1 on all freq 80-6. But would I notice an
efficiency increase using the Hamstick?
Thanks & 73's
