Well, OK, 47 years of radio and I fell for this one. Had had the front panel
off a couple of days ago, something I should have included as a part of the
problem.
Brought the 706 in from the truck and put it on the bench. Checked it against
the crystal calibrator on a Kenwood 520. Yep, quite low, about a KHZ. But I
decided to try something else. Put the 706 on dummy load and put it on what
appeared to be 14298.98, where the MMSN was being heard, and transmitted on USB.
Hmmm... Off freq in the Kenwood. And I had just checked that calibrator
against WWV. Tuned the 706 until it was received on 14300 on the Kenwood.
Transmitted and observed TX frequency. 14300. Damn, sounds like an RIT
problem. But the RIT diode isn't lighted. However, I punched the RIT button,
got a beep, and the diode still wasn't lighted. Ah... was the RIT on all this
time? Well, yes, that's exactly what it was. Probably while riding down the
road I hit the RIT while bouncing along these dirt roads.
So why wasn't the RIT diode lit? I decided to pull the front panel again.
Maybe I bent a pin in the jack, maybe I broke something when I had it off
before. Well, no answer to that, since, when it put it back today, the RIT
diode now works fine. Have since pulled it once more, and examined it. I can't
find anything wrong, but now the RIT diode lights properly.
Simple darned button fooled me. Well, it won't be my last stupid mistake.
73 and thanks for the help. From the OF forced to live in the digital age!
