I do not have any suggestions for you, but I look forward very much to
hearing what the outcome is.  I own one of these beasts also....

I have an original 706, bought it used/broke/as-is for $50.00.  After 30
minutes, I had the problem figured out.  $65.00 in parts and an hour labor
later, I had a working radio.  I am completely happy with it, use it
portable with the rechargeable jumper-battery kit mentioned in previous
posts.  Along with the AH-3 and a 35ft fiberglass vertical, it is a fine
station.

Keep us posted as to what you find... please.
