Demetre, perhaps the difference is that the rigs sold in Europe came from
the factory already set up for full[frequency operation. Rigs sold in the
US, however, are not and to obtain the frequency coverage, the owner is
required to open the case and physically remove, change or add components.

It is this likelihood of damage to the radio from the owner's efforts that
usually serves to invalidate the warranty if the manufacturer so chooses.

One of the first things I did with my brand new IC-765 in 1990 was to snip
that one diode lead and open up the transmitter. Why? So that I would have
an all-band signal generator with quite good frequency calibration, a
variety of modulation capabilities , and the availability of a few watts to
drive antenna instrumentation if needed to check things at band edges and
beyond.

I can assure you that nary a watt has been radiated outside any ham band for
communications purposes! <:}
