The 7400 is about the same as the 746PRO sold in the USA. Except there is
only 2 MHz of 2 M coverage, i.e.., 144.00 and 145.00. It does have FM on it
but the lower 2 M coverage affects the broadband aspects and thus it is more
optimized for 2 M SSB weak signal work.
There are also some differences in HF band coverage's but mine was
reprogrammed to comply with the FCC rules prior to shipment to me and was
certified to do so.
The 7400 does have DSP as well as the bells and so forth as on the 746 PRO.
There is a slight difference in the front panel markings ( yes most are in
English) The owners manual, service manuals and everything else is in
Japanese. Even the marking on the back of the rig are in Japanese
The PS 125's that I have are also the European versions and thus the fan
speeds are a lot quieter as well as they have 2 wire power cords, not the 3
like the USA version.
I did try a 3 wire cord on one of them and I did hear some RF hash in a 756
PRO II. It went away when I put the 2 wire cord back ????????????
All of my 125's except for one are the European versions and the USA version
that I have one of is noisier and has some RF hash in the rig.
I also have several European versions of the SM 20 mikes and there are a
very few differences. The USA versions tend to be a little more tinny
(similar to a Heil Goldline) where the European versions tend to be a little
more mellow.
And now you have the rest of the story. Your results may vary as all tests
were done under controlled conditions.. My conditions and my control.......

Is the IC-7400 different than the IC-746? If so, how, does the 7400 not
have FM?
There must be some advantage to the 7400, or else Diamond wouldn't dig for
diamonds...
Sorry - I had to do that pun!

If you are not going to be using 2M FM but rather, SSB the IC 7400 is a
great choice. That is the European version of the 746 PRO.
It is a great weak signal low VHF rig.

i am looking for an all mode HF/6/2 base rig. many have suggested the
706mkIIG
and for the money it seems like a great deal - but i'm not going to be using
it
as a mobile rig. i was thinking about getting a used 746 since it is geared
more toward a base rig application plus it has a built in tuner.
anyone care to offer some thoughts on these radios?
