Hi Charlie,
I connect the ALC line between my IC-756Pro2 and Yaesu Quadra. Proper
connection and adjustment of the ALC is absolutely mandatory when using a
solid-state amplifier. The ALC is the amplifier's first line of defence.

With a tube amplifier, it is advisable to connect and set up the ALC line to
avoid overdriving the amplifier - especially if the amplifier has sufficient
power gain to reach its maximum design output (or legal limit, whichever is
less) with less than 100W drive. The ALC is adjusted whilst transmitting a
steady carrier, to limit the amplifier output to the desired level.
Icom radios have a negative-going ALC input with 0 ~ -4V control range.

Subject: [Icom] ALC line with 756 PRO II
Does everyone use the ALC line with the 756 PRO II when using non Icom
amplifiers? I see this mentioned in the manual yet I never used an ALC line
with a modern amplifier like the Alpha 87A or the Ameritron AL-80B etc.
What gives?
