The mod to remove the attenuation on the Icom R-70 and R-71 prevented a
relay from actuating. The relay prevented the radio from going OUT of the
attenuated, pre-amp off state.
When a wire was snipped, the relay no longer functioned - and the preamp
could be turned ON in the broadcast band - and more importantly on 500 kHz
DISTRESS for ships.
This receiver was used on many ships in this way as a reserve (battery)
receiver - and was the BEST receiver ever used for this use!
