Are you sure it isn't a mod which removes the attenuation in the AM
broadcast band?
The conjecture is to bypass R11-14 on the RF board.  Why is is conjecture?
No one has admitted to trying it out and publicizing the results.  Others
think there's too much atmospheric noise on MW to make removing the
attenuation worthwhile.
Page 10-1 of the service manual shows the built-in attuenuator in the block
diagram, page11-5 shows where they are in the schematics.
