[Icom] comments on buying a used HF rig

Hart - there are as many answers to this question as there are hams! If
you're not already an ARRL member, you might want to consider joining so
that you can read the old transceiver reviews on their website. Also, they
maintain a large matrix which compares key characteristics of most HF rigs
from the past 15 years or more. If I were you, I'd consider buying a used
rig from one of the larger ham stores in the USA because they offer
warrantees on their used gear. You pay a bit more than if you bought from
an individual, but you can rest assured that it works properly, or they'll
make it right. I buy all of my gear second-hand, and just about every piece
of equipment I've ever bought from an individual had something wrong with
it. Generally, I can fix it myself, but on those rare occasions when I have
to send it off for service, it's a very expensive proposition.

I suggest you first decide how much you want to spend, then check out the
used gear lists at AES, Burghhardt, Ham Radio Outlet. Another good source
of gear is the QTH.com classifieds. Most rigs built in the past 10 years or
so meet the sketchy requirements you stated. You can also find reviews at
eHam.com of just about every piece of gear made in the past 10 years. Just
keep in mind that most of the reviews are positive, as individuals usually
won't have anything bad to say about something they just spent lots of money
on.

Good luck in your search.
