Hi,

The FL-52 has a higher profile package, the footprint and pin-out is the 
same but the case is slightly taller. In the newer radios the FL-52A is 
almost always required due to the lower vertical clearance to the case. 
Older radios such as the 740, etc. can use either, because they were 
designed for more vertical clearance and as such will accept either profile 
height.

The same applies to the FL-53 versus the FL-53A.

BTW, in the IC-756 there is just enough clearance to install the old "non-A" 
filters. There are some pictures of an FL-53 installation I performed to my 
IC-756 on Adam Farson's web site.
