Joe's method of locating noise works well.
To improve the noise pickup, wind a coil with insulated wire of 4 windings
at about 30mm diameter and solder the coil across the end of the coax.
This wand sniffs out any noise.

: For what it's worth. Many years ago when I used to have mobile, to
help
: locate auto generated noise I used a length of coax long enough to reach
: from the antenna to anywhere on the car. I left about one inch of center
: conductor protrude, taped it as to not come in contact with + side of
: battery. I then used it as a probe at various suspected noise generators.
: With the receiver turned on, it was simple to hear noise increase as I got
: close to noise source.
