"Best" here means SSB with a mic without a PTT switch. Having the Heil
footswitch, a mic with a PTT switch, and accidentally pressing the mic
PTT just before stepping on the footswitch will "Hot key" the amp which
is very tough on the amp circuitry. The Heil interface is really not a
good solution for CW, RTTY, PSK31 etc. unless you enjoy manually
operating the footswitch at precisely the proper time. Programs like
Digipan for PSK31 send a command to the radio via DTR or RTS. The radio
then begins transmitting. An external device that connects between the
radio's Send jack and the amplifier is a much better solution for many
people who use the radio for more than an SSB only box.
