Joel,
In July 2000 I bought an IC-756Pro. Then I came back from Dayton 2002 with
an IC-756Pro II. You can read some comments I wrote on the Pro II here:

The FT-1000D is one of the best analogue radios ever made, but if you are
looking in that direction you may want to consider a good, used IC-781.
However, you may find going back to an analogue radio a little difficult
after having lived with those superb DSP IF filters. If you get an FT-1000D,
you will also miss the spectrum scope.
As for the TT Orion, it will be best to wait until it has been on the market
for a while, and passed the ARRL Lab test suite and the first rev. level.
Icom is developing a new radio which is intended to replace the IC-775 and
IC-781. This new transceiver will incorporate technology licensed from Rohde
& Schwarz of Germany, and is worth waiting for. It will be high-end; the
price will be in the $5-6K range.

Subject: [Icom] want advice
i presently own an Icom 756pro and getting restless for a possible change. i
am wondering if there are some opinions regarding how the Yaseu FT-1000D
compares with the pro. is it worth it to buy a pro II. Is the Yaesu a
"superior" radio even at its old age. I was also contemplating the new
TenTec orian once it comes out
thanks
