[Icom] Antenna Balun/IC-756PRO

You can try out the internal tuner by simply setting your 989C to minimum
capacitance, inductance and selecting the balanced line input (no tuner
inductance and no tuner capacitance). Just remember, the Icom manual states
that the tuner is not recommended for use on antennas with greater than 3:1
SWR on HF or 2.5:1 on 50 MHz. Your antenna tuner will not read the same SWR
as your 756 because of added capacitance of the coax between your rig and
the tuner. Use the 756 SWR meter since what you are trying to do is keep
your radio's finals happy. Be very careful about fooling around with tuners
on 6 meters, that seems to be a particularly vulnerable spot with the
746/756 series of rigs (maybe others too).
Just as a note, if you suddenly get a drop in output power down to about 2
watts across all bands, you probably burned out the detector diodes. They
are not hard to replace, nor are they expensive, but it will cost about $100
+ shipping to have Icom replace them if you are not up to doing it yourself.
Gee, I wonder how I know that? <g>.
