Ron,
Passing strange it is - but I have owned Icom HF transceivers in all
categories since 1989, and have never encountered any of the problems you
have listed. In a total of 11 radios, there were 2 minor warranty issues.
In the 1970's, I worked professionally in satellite communications. There
was a spectrum-analyser display on the control console of the earth station.
This display gave an overview of all the signals on the satellite
transponder. I remember thinking at the time that it would be wonderful if
an HF receiver had a similar amplitude/frequency display.
Icom have put this facility within our reach. I have had Icom radios
equipped with a spectrum scope for nearly 10 years now; this is one
capability I would certainly not wish to give up.
The whole radio communications equipment industry has moved away from costly
electromechanical designs towards software control and DSP. The products can
only improve as semiconductor devices become faster and cheaper. It is
probably true to say that these days, a manufacturer designs an HF radio
platform with multiple markets in view - governmental, commercial, military
and amateur. The amateur market is a somewhat diminishing subset, and the
DX'er/contester market an even smaller subset of that. From the indications
I have managed to glean, the IC-781/775 replacement will be aimed primarily
at specialised governmental communications customers, as the IC-781 was
initially. There are large numbers of 781's in such applications; Icom will
probably position the new radio to replace them.
You may be well advised to hang on to your "big box" radio whilst the
hanging is good - until the spares supply is exhausted.

Hopefully, a big box with a strong dxing/contesting receiver and built
for reliability. No more of this 'bells and whistler' stuff (color
screens, super duper displays, encoders that quit, knobs that freeze,
etc.....) that dies in five years and can't be replaced. Keep it
simple, big, and reliable.......
