Mike,
The CCFL backlight, or the DC-DC converter that powers it, may have failed.
The converter may be similar to the one used in the IC-756. You can download
information on the IC-756 converter here:

The screen is black, like a light may be out?? I can still see numbers and
letters on the screen if I'm right on top of it. I tried changing the "LCD
