It is usually more accurate to use the indications of the meter
nearest the transmitter, in this case the 706 meter.
SWR meters, unless of laboratory quality such as a Bird 43 and the
like, tend to disturb the line impedance where they are inserted and
have an effect upon the meter between themselves and the transmitter.
Sometimes on some frequencies with some line lengths, etc. both meters
will read about the same, but in other situations their readings can
vary by quite a bit.
The most accurate indication will come from the meter in the
transmitter since what it is actually measuring is the difference
between the actual load impedance at the antenna terminals and 50 ohms
resistive.

Subject: [Icom] Question about Icom IC-706MK2G SWR Meter
> Hi,
> I have a question about the Icom 706MK2G swr meter. I recently
hooked up an MFJ-945E antenna tuner and while checking SWR's with it,
I am showing high readings. However without the tuner the swr meter on
the icom is showing me good 1:1 readings. The antenna's I am using are
hamsticks for 160-10 meters. My question is, are the swr readings from
the radio's built in swr meter accurate without the tuner or should I
go with the swr reading from the MFJ-945E and make my adjustments to
the whips from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 73
Good DXing and have a Happy Thanksgiving. Love to eat the bird.
