I wanted to see if anyone else has used the ICOM 706 MK IIG in a CW contest?
I have the 350HZ filter installed. In general, performance is outstanding
for a rig this size, and there are a couple of tradeoffs versus using a
full-size rig like an ICOM 756Pro(which I had until recently).
When the band is very crowded with strong signals, I noticed 2 things.
The noise floor rises to about an S6 or so from the leakage from strong
adjacent signals. Also, you may notice in the background a "chorus of
signals", sort of like a pileup for those of you who have been on the
operating end of a DxPedition. 20M seemed to be the band on which this was
the worst, 15M was the least problem, and 40M was not as bad as 20 but worse
than 15.
Does anyone have a comparison report of using the 250Hz filter vs the
350? I'm wondering if using the 250 would improve the performance.
I'm not complaining about the performance, I still love the radio and
consider these problems a worthwhile tradeoff for being able to take the
radio portable or even on a dxpedition (single op though).
Thanks and 73
