There is room.  back in the 'old' days when this WAS the radio to have
we would put the pl unit inside and cut out a section and glued a dip 
switch in just above the switches on the back panel
Don't ask me any more details as one of one the guys in our club did a 
bunch of them and got quite good at it.  He is now an SK
Matter of fact, I think I still have one of the dip switches.
