Hi, Chris
Quickly, how about sticking in a thermometer stick onto the heat sink
and
see how much it reads after xmitting for a while. If it doesn't get hot
enough to
make your finger tip burn when you touch, no need to worry. Again main
thing
is keep the air flow. As long as there is air flow. In summer, my house
heat
exchanger goes into cooling mode, so temp. inside the house is pretty
constant
year round. Internal temp. can't just rise higher and higher since
ambient
temp. is quite cool. Often times they don't apply enough heat sinking
compound
on PA x-sistors. Not only on our radios, TV, VCR, Stereo, you name it.
When in doubt, open it up and look. If there is not much of the paste,
apply
some and also make sure the fan control thermistor is properly mounted.
If you want to improve air flow, make a chimney from card stock or
plastic
sheets, you know where to put it.

Tony, VE6CGX
P.S. Working on 160W tube amp tonight. 3 pairs of matched 6L6s
converting into
3 pairs of EL34s. My boy says, "Where did you learn to work on this
stuff?"
I ask, what did you learn in your physics class? He says, "They
don't
teach stuff like this" I say, "Hmmmm". Good thing he wants to be a
civil
engieer/lawyer, hi.
