Hi,
That IR opto chopper has to be in alignment because it uses two pulses.
You mention spindle has a play which does not sound good. If you have a
'scope, it'll be much easier to fix it. If compressed air does not clean
the emitter/detector module, you wet a lint free cotton fabric soaked
in freon and rub them to clean off dirt build up.
