Jerry, I have a 706M2G mated with the Yaesu ATAS 100 motorized antenna. The
FT100 and the antenna work quite well with each other as they were designed
to do so. Using the 706, tunning any antenna but particiularly the ATAS 100
was a less than optimal affair. AM COM has now produced a remote box that
supposedly solves all the problems for 706 users regardless of the antenna.
With this device, one just punches the tune button on the radio, and it
attempts to achieve reasonance within the parameters the user has defined in
the initial setup program. This device also has a remote head just like the
radio. It costs on the order of $210. and is I am told selling faster than
they can be made. I ordered one several weeks ago, and am advised it is in
the mail at last. Many of us consider the 706M2G a superior mobil radio to
the FT100. However, suspect just as many would rally to the FT100. QST as I
recall, ranked them evenup. Many consider the ATAS 100 (yaesu) antenna to
be less than the best mobil antenna. However, it is lightweight, motorized,
weather booted, tunes 6M-40M and therefore is ideal in many installations
that cannot tolerate the significantly heavier and larger screwdriver type
mobil antennas. AM COM has a web site, just do a Google search, am sure you
will find it. Good Luck. Bill/KC5ICR

Subject: [Icom] Which One?
| Hello all,
|
| I have been hauling my 756pro back and forth to from the shack to my RV
for
| a year now and have decided it is just too much of a hassle to continue.
Now
| the question.... I looked at a friends installation of a new Yaesu FT-100
| (160-UHF 450) and played with it a little. This thing was pretty slick and
| seemed ideal for mobile use. I have never seen a 706 installed or played
| with one. Same band coverage but it seems the Yaesu had more digital
| features and used less filters. Now I am a Icom fan but not sure which
unit
| is has the better design. I know some of you have played with both and
can
| steer me right! I use an AH-4 and a whip on the RV.
|
| Thanks to all in advance.
