Dave,
I was in the London (Mayfair) last week and couldn't find a Amateur Radio 
store anywhere to look at the higher priced (thanks to 17.5% VAT Tax) radios. 
 Are there Amateur Radio Stores operating in the area?  I tried all of the 
links on the RSGB web site.  

What keeps G/M stations from ordering all their radios from elsewhere?  Even 
in the states sometimes we buy out of the state we live to save our local 
sales tax (4-10%). If you remove the VAT your prices are competative to ours, 
well almost.
