[Icom] Question

I would guess that since Icom has no control over what aftermarket
batteries you put in the BP-170, they can't go on record as to what
charging specifications to use. That is a very valid position on their
part. They have no idea if you are going to put in 500mah AA's, or
1500mah "hi cap" AA's and each battery configuration might take a
different set of specs. While you specify Nicads, they can't be sure you
won't try Nimhs, Lithiums, or even Alkalines. When they build the
"official" battery pack, they know what's in there and can spec the
charger to those known AA's. From a liability standpoint, if they give
you a spec, and something goes wrong even if you use the wrong battery
type, then the lawyers go on a feeding frenzy. They are better off just
saying "no" and not opening a can of worms.

I don't know any manufacturer that provides specs for charging, using
their charger and their generic "AA" battery pack. In fact I think most
indicate that you NOT use their charger when using the generic pack.
