[Icom] Help on blocking Rx and Tx on my 706MKII

Hi Sasi,
Others are shaking their heads as if this cannot be done. I'm not quite
so sceptical though I have no absolute detail on how to go about this.
In total it may be impossible, but for one thing I heard that all radios
that go to Australia had to have the 50MHz coverage disabled and I know
this can be done by adding/swapping the appropriate flea sized diodes. I
think there may be other countries where such restrictions also apply.
Here in Thailand it would be impossible to even consider importing a
706, or any other rig that covers 50MHz for that matter, never mind if
it can be disabled. Simply the fact that it states in the spec that the
radio can do it is enough to bar it from ever getting type approval
here. I even heard they refused type approval here for another
manufacturers radio that has an optional 50MHz transverter, just because
it mentions it in the specification! Good luck with the mod
Extending this a little. Would it not seem reasonable these days to have
a facility on the rig to change coverage and such like in the radio's
firmware. I'm thinking a little like Ten-Tec do with a couple of their
rigs. Now I understand Icom are planning a new "SUPER" rig didn't this
ought to include such facilities. I'd like to be able to set band edges
and then have the radio switch to the next band when it reaches the end
of one range.

Subject: [Icom] Help on blocking Rx and Tx on my 706MKII
Hello fellow hams,
Greetings from Sunny Singapore!
This request might seem strange when everyone looks
for mods to open up a transceiver, here I am asking
how to block my XCVR! ;-) Singapore has very stringent regulations on
type approval of amateur radio transceivers which requires a XCVR to Tx
and Rx within the amateur bands only. I am trying to get my MKII type
approved, which would probably be the first of its type here.
Has any one blocked his / her XCVR such that it Rx and
Tx falls within the amateur bands only? I would
particularly like to knock out segments between 30.000
MHz - 49.999 MHz, 54.000 MHz - 143.999 MHz and 148.000
MHz - 199.999 MHz. Should add that mine is an American
Version
The authorised agent (with whom the radio is lying
now, since I am not permitted to do the mod) and I are
breaking our heads on this. The last option would be
to disable one of the local oscillators. We would
prefer the diode approach as it is reversible in case
I decide to go maritime mobile after my assignment in
S'pore. Any help from folks who have done this would
be greatly appreciated.
In anticipation

(PS : Checked mods.dk and have the service manual
too..but little or no luck)
