Gary,
Per hit the nail on the head. You can also zero beat in LSB/USB
mode which is faster (but slightly less accurate). In SSB mode just tune
just until the pitch gets so low you can't hear it, i.e. just beyond low
rumbling. On strong signals you still hear a faint clicking sound. Call
this frequnecy f. Then switch to CW, you are now listening to f+600Hz and
transmitting at f. In the CW-R mode you are listening on f-600Hz and
transimitting at f.
