If you don't have one. I would run a ground strap from the base of the
antenna to the body of the car. Make sure the body is bonded to the engine
block. I need to do that to my pickup truck. You can find a lot of info at
http://www.k2bj.com/.

Subject: [Icom] IC-706MKIIG shutdown
Hi all, I have an IC-706MKIIG running mobile with a Hustler on a mag-mount
on the trunk of my car. It's been fine with the 17 meter resonator, but I
just tried it with the 20 meter resonator and after a couple of seconds of
PTT down, the radio powers down completely. The SWR is low, so my only guess
is that I'm getting some stray RF floating around inside the car. The
troubleshooting section of the manual doesn't show anything for spontanious
shutdown like this.
I don't want to damage the radio and I'm not sure what to do about it. The
instruction manual doesn't say anything about grounding the radio in a
mobile installation, so it's just floating. I also don't believe the shield
side of the hustler is grounded - the mag-mount is covered with rubber to
protect the car's paint. Could one of both of these cause trouble? Has out
there anyone experienced this problem?
Tnx and 73,
