Hi Sean,
I can't give you any first hand information about the 756 LCD, but I can
tell you that more times than not, my experience with flakey LCD's has been
that the connections to the LCD were at fault. Specifically, if the LCD
glass itself is connected to the ribbon cable, etc. via a rubberized
material (called a "zebra strip" in the industry), the problem can often be
solved by simply removing the LCD glass from its conductive rubber "zebra
strips" and giving everything a good cleaning with a mild solvent such as
alcohol. I too have a 756 (non-pro) and have not yet experienced this
anomaly with the LCD, but if/when I do, the first thing I will attempt is
just what I described.
Next problem - the tuning encoder. Don't be to hasty on shelling out $70
for a new encoder. If the frequency won't change at all (any digits), then
it _might_ be a problem with the encoder. Otherwise, the fact that only the
last two digits "freeze" is more likely to be an intermittent connection or
component that is specifically related to the "TS" key functionality. Off
hand, other than the TS key itself, I can't think of what it might be. Take
a look at the schematic - something might be obvious if you look in this
area. If I'm not mistaken, the tuning encoder provides the same two
quadrature pulses to the micro no matter what frequency resolution you have
selected.
Best of luck!
