It's normally in a VFO mode, i.e., tune the dial and it changes
frequency. You can turn the memory knob and it will move to the next
memory position but turning the tuning knob will change frequency about
that point. To go directly to a memory without turning the knob, enter
the memory number on the keypad and then push the memory knob in.

Tuning to a memory channel and then tuning to a frequency and then
pushing the write button will write that frequency into the memory
channel you have selected.

You can also directly enter a freq by the keypad and using the enter
button.

You might look at the Icom site or other Icom support sites for FAQ's on
the display. I'm pretty sure it has a 30 volt inverter for the gas
display tubes and likely that has a poor solder connection. I had that
problem on my Icom 765 with the same type of display and you have a real
mechanical project on your hands. The 30 volt supply is mounted on a
circuit board that is soldered to the main board with a metal cover over
it. What happens is the two board are connected by pieces of solid wire
and when they soldered it to the main board, it loosened the connection
on the sub board. The only way to get to it is to take off the metal
cover. you get the idea...
