Another trick that I use - maybe this is real obvious to everybody else but
it took me a little while to figure it out....

I like to operate several modes on HF - CW, PSK/RTTY, and SSB - with about
an equal mix. Since each band position has three memories [in other words,
you press the 7 MHz button three times and get three frequencies and three
mode settings... it cycles back to the first setting when you press the
button the fourth time], I have set up the band memories for: first push -
CW end of band and CW mode; second push - PSK/RTTY portion and USB mode, and
third click - SSB end of the band and SSB mode. When I switch between bands
and modes, I can navigate more quickly to the frequency and mode I want with
band-clicks than with a band click then a mode setting then a dial spin.

Your mileage may vary - works good for me.
