This may be irrelevant but my experience trying to solder those tiny Mini
Dins has been ALL BAD. I melt the case, short pins, etc. I wish they would
stick to the full size ones. S-Video is a pain too!

Subject: [Icom] Icom 706 MKIIG PSK31 6pin Mini Din Interface Problem -
Help!
Hi all,
Here is a quick overview:
I am trying to use the 6 pin mini din connector on the
back of the IC-706MKIIG for digital communications
as described on page 37 of the manual and it doesnt
work as described.
I have a Rascal soundcard interface
which takes sound from the radio into the soundcard
and audio from the computer into the radio.
The rascal also has an rs232 interface which controls
PTT, and an LED which indicates when tranmit is on.
I am using MixW 2.0 software which is like Digipan
so I can generate a variety of protocols such
as PSK31 and Packet and SSTV and so on.
MixW generates these signals in the soundcard
(which then goes to the radio). The soundcard
picks up these signals via the radio and Mixw uses
the a/d converter in the soundcard to decode
them into english onscreen.
The PTT is activated by the RTS line on the
db9 rs232 connector on the computer, and is connected to
the PTT line on the radio. MixW controls this also.
The problem:
I can monitor psk31 and other protocols just fine,
but PTT will not activate. The rascal LED lites
but the icom does not go into transmit mode.
This means the computer, the software and the
rs232 db9 all work and the Icom (ptt line) doesnt.
as a result, I also dont know if the data line works
on the icom either.
What I DO know for fact:
1 .I know the rascal works and is wired correctly.
It already works with another radio (Kenwood TM-V7),
it transmits and receives perfectly.
2. The pinout for the 6 pin minidin is identical on both radios,
"as stated in each user manual" respectively.
3. Icom says its supposed to work as stated. They say its
"plug and play" with no needed menu settings.
4. It does NOT work as stated.
Help!!!
I welcome any and all info, suggestions or fixes, etc.
Thank you,
James Long, KC8RYX
