Hal,
It all comes down to how loudly one speaks and how you position the
microphone. Some folks literally yell into their mics (and whenever
they speak, for that matter!), while others speak very softly. The
Goldline doesn't always have enough reserve gain to accommodate those
who are soft spoken.
For some, the Goldline must be close-talked and that can add bass, due
to proximity effect. The HM-i has virtually no proximity effect and its
inherent response allows greater adjustment range of VOX, mic gain and
transmit tone controls on most Icom radios.
The choice of a microphone is subjective and highly dependent on the
operator's voice. That is why you see such disparate replies to these
types of questions.
