Doc, your experience causes me to wonder if your NIR-12 was not having a
problem. Mine always has been instantly effective on removing heterodynes
completely. Neither do I notice any sensitivity in the control settings or
distortion as long as the audio input does not cause the overload LED to
light up.

Like you, that is my biggest use of it was on SSB with my 765. However,
since getting the Icom PRO, I find that its DSP notch filter is superior
even to the NIR-12, as is the noise reduction.

Glad you ended up with a unit that you like and does a good job for you.
