I think in Ten Tec's case, its a convenient excuse. They have one point t=
o=20
make, and that is in regards to weight and possibly the 12 volt issue. Th=
e=20
Paragon made enough digital hash all on its own, and Ten Tecs are the onl=
y=20
radio I know of that are acutely sensitive to external power supply locat=
ion.

The internal supply on the 751A and 740 was a high voltage inverter, and =
was=20
*dead* quiet. The internal supply in the MP is similarly dead quiet. Yes,=
 I=20
have done A/B comparisons and found *no* difference. I know of one case w=
here=20
the internal supply tended to run hot, and that was in the case of the Ya=
esu=20
767. Largely, that was caused by the pass transistors and the PA sharing =
the=20
same heat sink.

Internal supplies can indeed make heat and noise, but they needn't. In t=
he=20
case of the Icom 740 and 751A, they add little heat at all, no noise and =
the=20
radio can be operated from an external 12V source in 10 seconds. Since th=
ey=20
are high voltage inverters, the added weight is nominal. The radio comes =
with=20
a carrying handle. Regarding Ten Tec's position on internal supplies, all=
 I=20
can say is Icom was doing this routinely 20 years ago; whats the problem?
