I prefer transceivers with external power supplies.
Here is TEN-TEC's philosophy about this item:

We like the idea of keeping the heat from the power supply out of the
transceiver.
We also prefer 13.8 Volt DC transceivers which make emergency battery
operation practical.
The rig is also a much better "traveller" whether operating portable or
shipping the unit.
Keeping the 50/60 Hz primary power contained in a separate enclosure
contributes to lower receiver noise.
This engineering practice contributes to our reputation for quiet receivers

I agree with their statements.
Besides that we in Europe have the CE-normation and some transceivers (like
the FT-1000D) did not get an approval; one reason was the built-in power
supply.
