I've been using the stock mic and have had OK results. I do have the HS706
and use it mobile. Now that I'm using my 706 as a temporary station radio
(only spare HF rig I own), I'll report back results when I go to the Heil
mic

I observed this problem and it is pretty known among
the 706 users. I got too sick of the stock mic and
invested on a Heil HS706. Boy! That made a big
difference. Once I had the HS 706 in hand, I opened up
the stock mic and removed a rubber disk (some people
call it the muffler!) and that made some
difference...ofcourse it is no where close to the
HS706 that I have. If you open up the stock mic,
please be very careful with a tiny 'lil spring at the
base of the PTT. It fell out of mine and I spent a
good deal of time searching for it.
Good luck with the mic and enjoy the radio
