bought it for hobby use, at a price tag of about US$10k, without options.

In 1997, I received an e-mail from a Dutch ham living in California,
requesting my opinion on the Signal/One Milspec 1030CI (a re-worked IC-781
which sold at the time for around $16K). I recommended that he consider the
R&S XK2000 series instead, as it was a far superior radio in the same price
region as the 1030CI. A few weeks later, he e-mailed me to the effect that
he had placed an order for an XK2010. In the meantime, Signal/One has gone
bankrupt and closed its doors.
