Rick,
  If you open up the enclosure on the new speaker and disconnect the 
tweeter, you will definately notice an improvement. The idea is NOT to 
encorage the high frequency reproduction in your audio. that is where most 
of the noise is.  I got ecellen results from a $5 garage sale speaker and 
eclosure by  removing enery thing but the 12" Woofer and suffing the area 
behind it with loosely crumpled newspaper. net result of noticeably reduced 
hiss and qrn (lightning noise) on 160 and 75.
