Does the 765 have a combination RF/Squelch control like on the 756 Pro? 
The control operates as RF gain on SSB/CW etc and Squelch on AM and FM. 
It may be the squelch is too tight on AM but allows FM to get thru. Set 
your rig to AM and try rotating the RF/SQL (if you have one on the 765) 
and see if that helps.
