[Icom] Seeking better audio from my IC-746

Johnny, you mention an SP-20 - my external speaker is an SP-21. Does ICOM
sell more than one type of external speaker? I must have purchased the
cheap/useless model.

An external speaker will be certainly better. I am using the ICOM SP-20
which is very good indeed. However, I feel the SP-20 is very pricy so that
you may wish to shop around the market. Any set-up with 5 inch diameter
speaker will be fine but you have to pay attention to the frequency response
and RF shielding arrangement. The use of toriod as RF choke along the
speaker input cable could be a way to avoid RF feed to the speaker.

With respect to the speaker inside the rig, I did in the past replace it
with a better quality mid-range speaker. Clearly, you have to get one with
matched size. The result of the modification is good for my IC756.
