[Icom] Seeking better audio from my IC-746

I'm wondering if anyone has tried to improve the quality of the audio from
their 746 by using better external speakers. When I bought mine (back in
2000), I purchased the ICOM external speaker thinking that I would get
better sound than the top cover-mounted speaker in the 746 itself.
Every day I look at that external speaker and think that it is probably no
better than the one in the 746. The speaker element itself is no more than
3-4 inches in diameter. I'm not sure what's in the rest of that external
speaker unit (plastic box), but I'm guess it's just air.
I've used headphones with the 746, so I know it is capable of better audio
than what I'm hearing from the external speaker.
Also, is it just the 746, or do ham transceivers in general not provide any
tone control?

Rick
