I have used the HM-i mic on the Icom 746 and 706 and have never had trouble
driving either one of them. Do not remember the settings on the 746 anymore
but then it's not a 756 Pro so they wouldn't be appropriate anyway. I used
it exactly with the settings given by Bob Heil on the user sheet. Also used
a small amount of compression (sometimes). Mic gain on the rig was usually
at 10 or 11 o'clock. One thing, in the instructions for the HM-i, it
emphatically states; you will NOT close talk the mic (as many are used to
doing on Heil Mic's). You WILL speak into the mic from approximately two
inch's away, as I recall. Anyway, if you close talk it, it will sound like
crap. Also, NEVER use the "narrow" side. It rolls off the high's and
sounds like hell on SSB. That is also stated on the instruction sheet. You
should also use the wind screen that comes with the mic.
