Hi, Joe
You addressed the TX audio problem, but I can fill in the SUB MUTE a little.
The radio gives you a choice of having the opposite band mute when you
transmit, or not (as long as you have VHF on one side and UHF on the other).
With the muting function turned OFF, when you transmit on VHF, a UHF signal
will come on through. This wouldn't be too good if you're using the
speaker and built-in microphone, because the speaker audio would blare
right into the mic. But it's handy if you're using an earphone - you can
hold a full duplex (crossband) conversation, among a few other handy tricks.
If you're set up for VHF/VHF or UHF/UHF (same band on both sides of the
radio), SUB MUTE is forced on - you can't listen to VHF while
simultaneously transmitting on VHF.
To set the feature, turn the radio off. Hold down the A-SET-H/L^ button (I
think there are enough legends on that button!) and turn power ON. The
display will come up either SEMI CB or FULL CB. "CB" means Cross
Band. SEMI CB means the SUB MUTE is ON.
