With regard to the stock hand mic:
At least with the stock mic included with the ProII (HM-36), I found
(upon disassembly to find out why it sounded so GASTLY!) that Icom had
installed what looks like a tip from a pool cue stick hard against the
electret element within the housing, almost entirely restricting all audio
from reaching the diaphragm within. Once I applied the soon-to-be (Im
confident ;->) Icom-approved field modification by removing this wayward
refuse, the mics audio response was GREATLY IMPROVED! (What were they
thinking?)
      I sure love my 756ProII!

I did find that the hand mic is not optimal. The Heil Gold line,
Hmi, or the Astatic D104...
