What you are missing is this seemingly never ending quest to have the latest 
and greatest. Instead of honing, and improving, their operating skills, far 
too many of today's hams seem to be more into the "my rig's newer than your 
rig" mindset. Apparently, they simply cannot rest until they have the latest 
and "greatest" rig available. Which would be fine if they kept it long enough 
to become proficient in it's operation and if they didn't spend so damn much 
time talking about it! 

But, then they wouldn't want it!
