Probably not.
On the lower bands, the 756 already has plenty of gain,
perhaps even too much. If I remember correctly, reception
there is usually limited by atmospheric noise, not RF gain.
The preselector might help some with out-of-band signals,
but if the 756's built-in preselector is already being
overwhelmed, then you'll probably have other, more serious,
problems.
I've heard some say that a 6m preamp can help, but they
usually put their's at the antenna/feedline connection.
The 1040 isn't designed for that.
Someone gave it to you, right? It doesn't cost anything
to try it out.
Here's the real question. Is there anyway for the preamp
output to overload the receiver frontend to the point where
you actually damage it? My guess is that the 1040 would
top out before putting out a signal that big; but that's
just a guess.
